Bayonetta brings the fun, as well as the pain

Review by CARTER ROWELL

View: full size
Game type: Action.
Maker: Sega.

Platforms: Reviewed on Xbox 360. Also available for PS3.
Content Rating: Mature.

Hits: Bayonetta's combat system is fun and fluid. You can move from enemy to enemy, switch weapons in mid-combo or unleash magical attacks with a minimum of button-mashing.

You can also upgrade you weapons or purchase new ones. Some of the finishing moves are very entertaining to pull off. One lets Bayonetta summon a dragon that chomps on the boss and eventually snaps him in half.

This game is also very funny. Sexy Bayonetta is always cheerful and never takes anything seriously.

Misses: The story is just awful. It tries to be serious one moment, and then it shifts to the absurd and you're riding a rocket shooting laser beams at angelic foes.

Sometimes you just want to throw the controller at the TV, because some boss fights are unbelievably hard. Such fights seem to require more button-mashing and random guessing than actual planning and strategy.

Recommendation: The story of Bayonetta is outlandish and the gameplay can be hard, but it's a great game with fun combat, entertaining kills, and a great sense of humor.

Grade: B+
